Nomad Hotel
Brunngässlein 8, 4052 Basel, Switzerland
Buchner Bründler (2015-16)
On a recent visit to Basel I was introduced to the new ‘Nomad’ boutique hotel that opened in January 2016. It is a substantial refurbishment and re-build of what was the first apartment block built in Basel in the 1950s, with a new concrete extension designed by Buchner Bründler Architects, resulting in a total of 67 rooms including penthouse.
The design, particularly in the new extension, is a finely balanced composition of sparse concrete base overlaid with warmer timber joinery and soft furnishings. The spaces are well composed and meticulously detailed with any imperfections in the concrete pour accepted and worked with as part of the design. For those not partial to concrete can stay in the softer rooms in the refurbished original building. This would be a wonderful place to base yourself during Art Basel or during a Vitra and Herzog & de Meuron pilgrimage.
